- 02Pickup. Draw one card from the closed stock or take the open discard. The choice is the first place skill enters the hand.
- 03Sort. Group the cards in your hand into runs and sets, leaving one ungrouped card for the discard.
- 04Meld. Lay the runs and sets face-up on the table; pure sequences must be formed before you declare.
- 05Declare. Discard the last ungrouped card into the finish slot and announce the show. Score is read off the table.

The distribution of cards you receive. The next card from the closed stock. The card the player before you discards. Card distribution is what the random number generator produces; skill decisions change what you do with the cards, not which cards arrive.
